For Experienced Players

American Mah Jongg Quick Reference

Short reminders for players who already know the table flow and need quick confirmation during a game.

Charleston

  • First: Right, Across, Left.
  • Second: Left, Across, Right, only if table agrees.
  • Courtesy: across, 0 to 3 tiles.
  • Never pass Jokers.

Call A Discard

  • Only the most recent discard is live.
  • Call for Pung, Kong, Quint, or Sextet.
  • Do not call for Single or Pair unless it wins.
  • After exposing, discard one tile.

Concealed

  • C means no exposure during play.
  • You may call the final tile only to declare Mah Jongg.
  • An exposed concealed hand is dead.

Jokers

  • Allowed in groups of 3 or more.
  • Not allowed in Singles or Pairs.
  • Can be exchanged on your own turn with the matching natural tile.

Win Check

  • Exactly 14 tiles.
  • One complete current-card line.
  • Correct suits, Flowers, Winds, Dragons, and zeroes.
  • Legal Joker use and legal exposures.

Payment

  • Discard win: discarder pays double, others single.
  • Self-pick: all players pay double.
  • Jokerless may double, except where already built into the section value.

Defensive Reminder

Late-game discards that match an opponent's exposure.
